Youth & Alcohol Summit
October 20, 2010
The issue of alcohol use among our youth is a concern to us all.
In Manitoba, the average age a child tries alcohol for the first time is around 11 years of age. While not every child is going to try alcohol by Grade 5 or 6, research states that harmful patterns started in a person’s youth can lead to abuse and chronic disease conditions as an adult.
On October 20, 2010, the MLCC hosted the Youth & Alcohol Summit with the goal to seek strategies and produce recommendations for government that will prevent or delay the early use of alcohol by youth.
Participants in the summit included representatives from various government departments, health and addictions agencies, social interest groups, law enforcement, the beverage alcohol and hospitality industries, as well as a number of youth representing Grades 9 to 12.
